Wood Ventures Floor Register Solid Brass Victorian - Brushed Nickel

Wood Ventures Floor Register Solid Brass Victorian - Brushed Nickel

Hardwood flooring is attractive, classy and timeless. Any home is complimented by it. The value of your home will also increase when you install hardwood floors. These tips will show you how to install your floor register in hardwood flooring.

Careful planning and foresight are required when laying any hardwood flooring, more so when your air vents are in the floor. Once you decide on the direction of your flooring, the next step is to take note of where your floor vents are. The simplest installation method will have U shaped cuts being placed in two different pieces of wood that will meet up at over the vent. However, there are times when the vent will fall in the center of a single piece and there is no way to avoid this.

Begin laying your floor, being aware as you put pieces down that you will have to work around the vent. When you come to a piece that will reach the vent, you are ready to take measurements. Measure from the end of the last piece lay to the middle of the vent. Try to select a piece of flooring that will end roughly halfway over the vent. Lay this piece down, and then use a pencil to carefully mark the sides of the vent on the top of the board. Using the tape measure you can determine how far over the vent the board goes, and then mark this point on the board. With carpenters square, mark off the u-shaped cut that will be made.

When working with slimmer wood boards, you will probably not have to make the U-shape cut. In this case, you will probably just cut an L shape out of the board, and that is simple to do with the table saw. Once the first piece is cut, you can lay it in place and measure the next piece.

What if you are working with wood that is all one length and your vent will fall squarely in the middle of the board? This requires careful measuring. The boards or wall nearest the vent opening can be used as guides to take required measurements. Use the carpenters square to completely draw out the required opening.

A drill can be used to drill a pilot hole just inside all four corners of your board. A jigsaw can then be used to create the vent opening in the board.

The final step in installing a floor register in hardwood flooring is to place the register into the opening. Most floor registers simply rest on the opening. The register must be tested in the opening you have cut before you lay any other boards. This will allow you make corrections if you should find that the opening is not large enough. Likewise, if the opening is too large and will show under the vent, you will have a chance to cut another piece. The last thing you want is to finish laying the floor and then discover that your register will not fit properly in the opening.

At Knobs, Hinges & More we provide a wide-selection of floor registers to satisfy every taste and every home.  We carry floor registers from Atlanta Supply and Wood Ventures.

When brass doorknobs are brand new and first installed, they have a beautiful shine and luster. Over time and with exposure to weather, hand oils and other staining agents, brass doorknobs grow dull and unattractive. Commercial products are available that will clean them and restore the shine, but the products often run $10 or more for a small bottle and are sometimes abrasive. Replacing the doorknobs is an option, but definitely not a cost-effective one. Instead, try a homemade polish to make your brass doorknobs shiny again.

Important Tip:  You need to know if your brass door knob is lacquered or not.

To clean lacquered brass:

simply wipe with a soft, damp cloth; do not use any kind of household cleaner.

To clean nonlacquered brass:

 1. Squirt a dollop of ketchup on a rag, and rub over surface

 2. Wipe off residue with a damp cloth and buff dry.

For a homemade cleaner, dissolve 1 teaspoon salt in 1/2 cup vinegar and add enough flour to make a paste. Rub onto the brass and leave for 10 minutes; rinse and buff dry.
