Decorative Hardware Do’s and Don’ts

By

The home sales market has gone bust, so it looks like you are going to be hanging around in your place a lot longer then you expected. This in turn has left you wandering around the local warehouse hardware store scouting out ways to make your home a nice more comfortable place to live.

An Excellent Investment

Decorative hardware is an easy way to give your home the aesthetic boost that it needs, for several reasons. For one thing, it is generally easy to install if you have the right hand tools. Also, decorative hardware is something that will not escape notice. Much of it is at eye level and guests will in fact often have to touch it, as is with light and fan switches.

Start at Your Front Door and Porch

Your first target area should be your front door and porch. This is where the first impression is made on a potential buyer, like it or not. People like to see a good solid front door knob that looks like it is safe and durable. The same thing applies for lighting on the front porch. Don’t chince if you don’t have to, because the front porch and front door are both very important.

Something to Think About

You may have already noticed that you have innumerable choices in decorative hardware to select from at your local hardware store. The first thing that you will want to be careful of, is that you don’t buy components that cover a smaller area on the wall or ceiling that the component that you are replacing does.

You Don’t Need A Paint Job

This is because you will be stuck with an exposed ugly unpainted or faded area that you didn’t count on. If you don’t have matching paint to touch up these exposed areas around your component then you will have no choice but to paint all your walls and ceilings. Another tip, is to not go nuts and buy the most expensive decorative hardware available. Often moderately priced components look just fine when they are finally installed.

   Uses of Cabinet Knobs

Importance of Cabinets in the Urban Home

Cabinets are very important in one’s household. Those who are passionate about home decoration take great pains in installing the appropriate designs and styles of cabinets. They are useful in every room, and hence, should be chosen carefully, keeping sync with the rest of the furniture.

Kitchen Cabinets

Cabinets in the kitchen are the most extensively used. They are used to store utensils and cutlery as well as dry food and cooking material.

Cabinets in the Bedroom

In the bedroom cabinets are used to store winter wear which is used only a few months of the year. Extra bedding accessories and shoes are other objects stores in cabinets here.

Living Room Cabinets

The living room cabinets are lined with books, television sets, DVD players and music system. Music CDs and speakers require separate cabinets here.

Cabinets for the Children

Children’s rooms have cabinets for their clothes, toys and academic materials.

Bathroom Cabinets

These are used to keep a variety of things such as soaps, shampoos, mouthwash, toothpaste, toothbrush and even medicines. There are separate ones for towels and toilet papers.

Cabinet Knobs

Knowing this you must realize the importance of cabinet knobs. These knobs are bought in bulk since they are required for every compartment of the cabinets installed in one’s home. However, you can spice things up by using different cabinet knobs for every room to uphold their individual style and theme.

For the living room cabinets you can choose something sober like metallic or wooden cabinet knobs. These are easy to clean and maintain. Glass knobs are also not a bad idea, especially if they are used for cabinets that are lesser used. This reduces the chance of breaking them. They look very good as well.

For the kitchen you must be careful with your choice of cabinet knobs. These knobs are used extensively a large number of times everyday. Things are taken out and put in continuously into kitchen cabinets, making them susceptible to damage easily. Therefore, these knobs should be hardy and able to withstand rough environment. The heat, oil and moisture in the air in kitchens can damage wood and metal. Therefore, using ceramic or glass knobs is a good idea.

The storage or laundry room cabinets usually store cleaning agents and mops. The best types of cabinet knobs that should be used in such areas are ones made from water resistant materials.

Children’s rooms are great to experiment with knobs. Cartoon characters, alphabets and youth icon figures are great ideas for cabinet knobs in these rooms. If your kids are too old for such juvenile ideas, you can always install knobs of sports and entertainment figures.

Fitting the Knobs

One of the important aspects of fitting cabinet knobs is its size. You don’t want them to take up half the size of the cabinets; neither is it permissible to have them so small that one cannot even get a good grip to pull the door open. Measurement is the key in this case. Fitting them is not a Herculean task as long as you have a precise procedure and a steady hand at drilling in the nuts and screws. However, you can always hire professional help to get it done if you don’t want to risk it. Since they are available only in sets, if they are fitted wrongly, there is no way to replace single pieces.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with the style of knobs keeping in mind the general decoration of the room. They can lend an interesting touch to the overall look and attract a lot of positive attention.

Cleaning Solutions for Cabinet Hardware

by EHow contributer

Cabinet hardware is to cabinets what jewelry is to an outfit, greatly enhancing the overall look of your cabinets. Over time, however, moisture, dirt and grease take a toll on your cabinet hardware. A few simple cleaning solutions for cabinet hardware and some elbow grease make cleaning a snap and will even extend its useful life.

    Prepare

  1. It is important to remove the hardware from the cabinets before you clean it. This is necessary not only to do an effective  job but also because the cleaning products, polish and motion of scrubbing may damage the cabinets. Unscrew and remove all of the cabinet knobs and drawer pulls. Unscrew the hinges and take down the cabinet doors.
  2. Soak

  3. Pour some lukewarm water into a bucket and add some mild soap. Soak the cabinet hardware in the soapy water for 30 minutes to an hour. Lightly scrub each individual piece of hardware using a soft bristled brush such as an old toothbrush. Rinse them in warm water and then set them aside to dry. Screw the cabinet hardware back in place and rehang the cabinet doors.
  4. Sealant

  5. Today, most cabinet hardware is produced with a coating of protective sealant to prevent abrasion and corrosion. For this reason, you should avoid using harsh metal cleaners or polishes on your cabinet hardware, since it can damage this coating. Provide some extra protection to the metal surface of the hardware by applying the appropriate polish after cleaning hardware, such as brass cleaner for brass knobs.
  6. Copper

  7. Over time, copper cabinet hardware will tarnish (oxidize), particularly in moist environments such as bathrooms. In addition to cleaning it as described above, you can restore it to a bright, shiny finish with a few kitchen ingredients. Dissolve 1 tsp. salt in 1/2 cup vinegar, and then stir in 1/2 cup all-purpose flour to form a paste. You can add more flour to thicken the paste. Use a soft, clean cloth to rub the paste on the copper hardware. Rinse it off with warm water and allow the hardware to dry. You can protect the copper surface by applying a commercial copper polish or a lacquer spray.
  8. Maintenance

  9. After cleaning cabinet hardware, wipe it on a regular basis using a dry, soft cloth. This prevents the dirt and dust from accumulating, saving you some cleaning time and effort later on. Consistency makes for easy cleaning and maintenance.
